The Nutanix extreme computing platform or XCP is comprised of two comprehensive product families

Nutanix Acropolis and Nutanix prism.

XCP is the industry-leading hyper-converged infrastructure solution that delivers:

  • Enterprise-class storage.
  • Compute and virtualization services.

Nutanix Acropolis can be divided into three foundational components as shown below:

  • Distributed storage fabric (DSF)
  • App mobility fabric (AMF)
  • Acropolis hypervisor (AHV)

Prism provides one-click infrastructure management for all virtual environments running on Acropolis.

Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV)

Acropolis is hypervisor agnostic supporting to third-party hypervisors ESXi and Hyper-V in addition to the built-in Acropolis hypervisor, and integration with cloud services such as Amazone AWS, Microsoft Azure.

Nutanix ships with a hardened enterprise-ready hypervisor based on Linux KVM.

Acropolis hypervisor is managed through three different ways:

  • Prism Interface.
  • REST API.
  • Interactive command-line interface (Acropolis CLI).

These tools combined to eliminate the management complexity typically associated with KVM.

Multiple Acropolis control services run on each cluster with an elected master AHV is self-healing to tolerate failures and provide high availability out-of-the-box if a CVM goes down a new master is elected on another host.

Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF)

The distributed storage fabric delivers enterprise data storage as an on-demand service by employing a highly distributed software architecture.

DSF operates by way of a 10-gigabit network of CVM,s that forms a Nutanix cluster, and every node in the cluster has access to data from shared SSD, HDD, and cloud resources.

The hypervisors and DSF communicate using the industry standard protocols NFS, iSCS, and SMB3.

Nutanix eliminates the need for traditional SAN and NAS solutions while delivering a rich set of VM centric Software Defined Services (SDS).

In particular, the DSF handles the data path of such features as:

  • Snapshots & Clones.
  • High availability.
  • Disaster recovery.
  • Deduplication.
  • Compression.
  • Erasure coding.

Application Mobility Fabric (AMF)

The app mobility fabric provides built-in virtualization and integrated management that allows workload migration across hypervisors, with the app mobility fabric administrators can host production, staging, and dev environments on different hypervisors and shift workloads between them as needed.

The app mobility fabric also provides the management plane for a range of virtualization capabilities such as Live Migration, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery.

AMF is implemented by a distributed scale-out service that runs inside the controller VM on every node within a Nutanix cluster click the Nutanix acropolis layers.

Thanks.
